In a strategic move to dominate global AI governance discussions, Brazil has placed the regulation of artificial intelligence at the top of its agenda for both BRICS and G20 negotiations. Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira is making waves, calling for AI policies that safeguard democracy and global sovereignty, while ensuring the technology serves society
as a whole.

Vieira’s powerful stance at the AI Action Summit made it clear: Brazil is positioning itself as a global leader in shaping AI governance, emphasizing the urgent need for inclusive policies that prevent widening digital divides. “We cannot afford to let AI deepen inequalities.

It must serve everyone,” he stated, highlighting the critical importance of including developing nations in AI regulations.
Brazil’s leadership is set to shine through as it presides over the G20, where AI’s role in combating misinformation and preserving information integrity will take center stage. With collaborations with the UN and UNESCO, Brazil is gearing up to spotlight AI’s intersection with climate change, bringing the conversation to COP30 in Belem.

As it prepares to chair BRICS in 2025, Brazil is pushing for the Global South to have a stronger voice in AI policymaking, calling for the UN to lead the charge in establishing global AI standards. Brazil’s aggressive AI strategy also includes national efforts to build a regulatory framework to ensure AI benefits are shared equitably – making it clear: Brazil is
ready to lead the world in AI governance.
