In a landmark move to combat land degradation and bolster food security, BRICS nations have officially launched the “BRICS Land Restoration Partnership.” This initiative, unveiled at the 15th BRICS Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting in Brasilia, Brazil, unites 11 member countries in a collective effort to restore soil fertility and halt desertification.
Representing 47% of the world’s population and 36% of global GDP, the expanded BRICS alliance is tackling critical issues head-on. By prioritizing the welfare of small and marginal farmers, the partnership aims to create a fairer, more inclusive global agri-food system. India’s delegation emphasized the importance of fair agricultural trade, price stability, and direct connections between smallholders and consumers.
The partnership will promote sustainable agriculture through shared programs like India’s National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA) and innovative approaches to climate-resilient farming. This united front signals a significant step towards climate adaptation, sustainable development, and empowerment within the Global South.
With a focus on innovation and collaboration, BRICS is setting a new standard for land restoration and agricultural resilience worldwide.
