A spiritual revival is sweeping across India’s travel landscape as searches for accommodation in the country’s most sacred cities have surged dramatically in early 2025. According to Agoda’s latest data, domestic and international travellers are increasingly seeking meaningful cultural and religious experiences, with cities like Allahabad, Varanasi, Ayodhya, and Rishikesh witnessing explosive growth in interest.
The standout star is Allahabad (now officially known as Prayagraj), which didn’t even make Agoda’s top 50 domestic travel destinations in early 2024 but has rocketed to an impressive 11th place in 2025. Accommodation searches for Allahabad skyrocketed by a staggering 233% in the first quarter compared to the same period last year. This surge is closely linked to the return of the Mahakumbh Mela after a 12-year hiatus-a once-in-a-lifetime spiritual event that draws millions seeking purification and blessings at the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers.
Varanasi, the eternal city and one of the world’s oldest living cities, also saw a massive boost, climbing 9 spots to become the 6th most searched city among international travellers. The holy city’s magnetic pull continues to attract visitors eager to witness its ancient ghats, spiritual rituals, and vibrant cultural tapestry.
Other spiritual hotspots are riding the wave of renewed interest as well. Ayodhya jumped 11 places to 25th, Rishikesh climbed 9 spots to 19th, and Vrindavan moved up 8 places to 24th in domestic travel searches. Among foreign tourists, Amritsar and Agra also gained significant ground, reflecting a broader trend of cultural and heritage tourism flourishing in India.
Gaurav Malik, Country Director for India Subcontinent at Agoda, noted, “This growing interest in India’s spiritual destinations highlights a shift in travel preferences, with more people seeking cultural connection and personal meaning rather than just leisure.”
With major religious events like the Chardham and Amarnath Yatras on the horizon, this spiritual travel boom is expected to intensify. For India, this surge not only boosts tourism revenues but also reaffirms the country’s timeless allure as a global hub for spirituality and cultural heritage.
