  • Upgrades aim to improve conditions for returning fishing vessels
  • Renovation budget totals approximately ₹1.4 crore
  • Water connection proposal remains unresolved, delaying reliable supply

The Beypore fishing harbour is nearing the completion of a significant renovation project, with authorities racing against the clock to finish upgrades before fishing activities resume later this week. This renovation comes after the annual trawling ban, which temporarily halts fishing operations, and aims to ensure that the harbour is fully equipped to handle the influx of vessels returning to sea.

Key improvements include a complete overhaul of auction halls, wharfs, parking areas, and other essential infrastructure. The Harbour Engineering department is overseeing the renovation, which is being executed under two separate projects with a combined budget of approximately ₹1.4 crore. This initiative follows numerous complaints from local fisherfolk regarding the deteriorating conditions of the harbour facilities. Fishermen reported that the damaged flooring in the auction hall complicated fish handling, while potholes on wharf obstructed the movement of trolleys transporting fish.

Despite these advancements, a longstanding proposal to establish a water connection for the harbour under a Japan-aided drinking water project has yet to be realized. Although the distribution pipeline has reached the harbour gate, Harbour Management Society has not yet secured the necessary water connection, which continues to delay the establishment of a reliable water supply at facility .
