Bharathiraja,acclaimed Tamil film director,died in Chennai June 10,2026,age 84. Known for reshaping Indian cinema,he had been battling health issues before his passing.
Bharathiraja moved Tamil cinema out of studios to real rural settings. His opening line, “Yen Iniya Tamil Makkale,” struck a chord with audiences,starting new storytelling era.
Throughout his career,Bharathiraja picked up six National Film Awards,four Filmfare Awards (South). Mentored many actors,giving them "R" names. Introduced Radikaa, Revathi, Ranjitha — now household names.
His debut,16 Vayathinile,released 1977, changed the game. Starring Sridevi, Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth,it portrayed rural life with raw realism. Characters,music by Ilaiyaraaja,left lasting mark. “Senthoora Poove” snagged National Award for S. Janaki.
