Tragedy struck in Bagnan,Howrah district,West Bengal,when political worker Prasanta Dey was killed June 17, 2026. Accusations flew against local deputy pradhan Sk. Mafijul and his supporters,who allegedly clashed with Dey over past misconduct and violent electoral practices.
The confrontation turned ugly as Mafijul's group reportedly attacked Dey and fellow party members. Later,Dey's wife got a chilling call telling her to retrieve his body . Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced eight suspects were arrested; the CID now has case for full probe.
At a press conference,Adhikari offered ₹9 lakh to Dey's widow and promised her a job. He urged public to trust justice system,warning against vigilantism. “No need for people to form mobs and confront suspects at home,” he said,assuring that police and CID will use advanced methods to solve this quickly.
Adhikari spoke as tensions rose in region,especially after unrest in Falta day before. Protesters there tried to storm police station to free detained Trinamool leader Jahangir Khan. Adhikari said 25 were detained over Falta protests,with three criminal cases filed.
With unrest ongoing,Adhikari reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to law and order in West Bengal. He called on community to trust legal system and said government is cracking down on corruption. “We changed governance to ensure rule of law,” he said,urging locals to avoid actions that disrupt order.
