Brazil's data protection authority, ANPD,has mandated that Discord suspend its livestreaming feature following tragic incident involving 13-year-old girl. The girl reportedly faced pressure from other users in a Discord server to take her own life during a livestream.
The investigation into this incident was initiated on August 7,shortly after the girl's death. The ANPD found that Discord lacks the capability for real-time monitoring of livestream content,which hinders platform's ability to detect violations automatically .
In response to the order,Discord stated it is "thoughtfully reviewing" the directive and emphasized its commitment to user safety. A spokesperson for the platform remarked, "Groups or individuals who promote or encourage violence have no place on Discord." The company swiftly shut down the private server linked to the incident shortly after its creation and continues to cooperate with law enforcement.
Five teenagers have been arrested in connection with case,highlighting the serious implications of online interactions among youth. Discord now faces a three-day deadline to comply with the suspension order and has the option to appeal within ten business days. If violations occur,the platform could incur fines of up to 50 million reais (approximately $9.67 million).
The ANPD has stipulated that the suspension will remain in effect until Discord can demonstrate it has implemented adequate protective measures for minors. These measures may include age verification checks to ensure safer environment for younger users .
This incident is not the first time a social media platform has faced scrutiny in Brazil. In August 2024, the platform X was banned for failing to pay fines and for not appointing a legal representative in the country, as mandated by a Supreme Court ruling. It was reinstated in October 2024 after complying with the court's requirements, including the payment of fines totaling 28 million reais (around $5.1 million).
