Brewery workers recount challenges after fermentation tanks implode

Key Takeaways

  • Two fermentation tanks at Lagunitas Brewing Company collapsed
  • Incident highlights risks in the craft brewing industry
  • Lagunitas maintains operations despite tank loss
  • Craft beer market challenges persist, but Lagunitas shows growth

Two fermentation tanks at Lagunitas Brewing Company in Petaluma,California, collapsed recently, drawing attention to the inherent risks of the craft brewing industry . The 500-barrel tanks, designed to withstand internal pressures, imploded due to a lack of proper venting during their emptying process. This incident, which occurred on June 18,2026, was the second of its kind for the brewery, with the first taking place in 2021 due to a failed gasket.

Ryder Morrison, the brewery's vice president of operations, noted that while human error has led to “near misses” in his 17 years at Lagunitas, this particular implosion was unprecedented in severity . He likened the collapsed tanks to crumpled soda cans, emphasizing the challenges of balancing automated and manual processes in brewing . Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the brewery has managed to maintain operations despite the loss of the tanks, which were primarily used for small-batch production.

Currently, Lagunitas operates 58 fermentation tanks with capacities ranging from 300 to 750 barrels. These tanks are custom-built,utilizing insulated,double-wall stainless steel to control fermentation and cooling processes. Morrison explained that the brewery's production capacity is influenced by various factors, including the quality of the grain, which has been affected by climate change and recent droughts. This year, high-protein grains have made lager production less efficient, impacting overall output.

Founded in 1993, Lagunitas has navigated numerous challenges, including relocations and market fluctuations . Now fully owned by Heineken International, the brewery remains a significant player in craft beer market, ranking as the fifth largest in the United States. Despite the struggles faced by many craft breweries,Lagunitas has seen growth, with revenue increasing by approximately 7% in its Petaluma taproom over the past year.

Jeremy Marshall, the head brewer, highlighted the importance of fermentation in creating brewery's signature flavors . He described the brewing process as a blend of making coffee and baking bread, where ingredients are added and removed to develop unique tastes . The brewery's flagship products, such as Lagunitas IPA and A Little Sumpin Sumpin Ale, continue to drive sales, with the latter seeing 19% increase in first half of the year.

As craft beer industry faces ongoing challenges,Lagunitas' ability to adapt and innovate remains crucial. Morrison and Marshall's insights reveal a commitment to quality and resilience, essential traits for navigating the complexities of brewing in a changing climate and market landscape.
