BTG Pactual, a prominent Brazilian financial group, has expanded its reach in the Colombian energy market by securing authorization to trade natural gas. Announced on August 24, 2026, this move allows the company to operate through its local subsidiary, BTG Pactual Commodities Colombia S. A. S. E. S. P., enhancing its existing power trading business.
The authorization enables BTG Pactual to engage in direct buying and selling of natural gas within Colombia, offering clients integrated products that combine price, term, and risk management. Although the specific regulatory body granting this permission was not disclosed, the expansion marks a significant step for the subsidiary, which has been active in Colombian power trading since 2022.
In the same week, Minerva Ingredients announced a milestone in Colombian trade with a direct shipment of beef tallow to the United States. This shipment, originating from Bucaramanga, is intended for renewable diesel production, opening a new export channel for Colombian tallow, which previously lacked a direct route to U. S. biofuel markets.
BTG Pactual's entry into the Colombian gas market is part of a broader regional strategy to develop a comprehensive commodities platform. The subsidiary, which boasts a AAA rating from S&P National Ratings, is also venturing into power generation with plans to acquire the Luzma I and II hydroelectric plants in Antioquia, pending approval. This acquisition would complement its commercial power operations, further solidifying its presence in the Colombian energy sector.
Manuel de Almeida Marins Gorito, a partner at BTG Pactual and head of Commodities, emphasized the regional significance of the move, stating that adding Colombia to their strategy allows for continued development of a regional platform. The company has yet to disclose the volumes or specific clients it plans to serve in the initial phase of its gas trading operations.
Meanwhile, Minerva Ingredients' shipment to the U. S. represents a $60 million market for Colombian tallow. The United States, accounting for approximately 45% of global biofuel production, presents a substantial demand for feedstocks like tallow. This direct export route was established following a series of certifications and approvals from both Colombian and U. S. authorities, although specific agencies were not named.
Both BTG Pactual's and Minerva's announcements signal a broader trend of Colombian energy and agricultural commodities entering larger regional and global markets. However, the success of these ventures will depend on future approvals, market demand, and partnerships that are yet to be fully realized. For now, these developments remain in the announcement phase, with the potential for significant impact on Colombia's economic landscape.
