Buses transformed Madras into Chennai, fueling urban expansion and connectivity

Key Takeaways

  • Chennai's Metropolitan Transport Corporation has expanded to nearly 3,500 buses
  • MTC's initiatives enhance public transport accessibility and inclusivity
  • World Bank funds new buses to improve service quality
  • Ongoing challenges include fleet maintenance and accessibility for disabled passengers

The history of public transportation in Chennai, once Madras, is deeply linked to the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC). Since its founding in 1947, MTC has grown from 30 buses to a major network of nearly 3,500, serving the city's vast area.

Originally called the Pallavan Transport Corporation (PTC), the organization has been reshaped multiple times, mirroring Chennai’s expansion and evolving transit needs. The PTC was established when former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi nationalized private transport routes in 1967, shifting public transport management significantly.

R. M. Cheralathan, a former MTC managing director, emphasized the importance of the government’s role in transforming the transport sector. MTC's model balanced social responsibility with business sense, helping it succeed despite obstacles. Over the years, MTC has set a standard for Indian public transport systems, notably for its inclusive initiatives.

The MTC offers free rides to students, seniors, and people with disabilities, recently extending this to women. These programs have made buses more accessible and boosted ridership.

As the fleet expanded, service quality improved. In 2001, air-conditioned buses debuted, with the first five AC buses on trial. By 2008, 50 Volvo AC buses were added, becoming a hit, especially on the busy IT corridor of Rajiv Gandhi Salai.

Challenges remain, particularly in accessibility for the disabled. Despite various bus models, the lack of low-floor buses is a recurring issue. Cheralathan noted that current high-board buses don’t suit all passengers' needs.

Adapting further, MTC has embraced modern tech and funding. The World Bank backed its growth, funding 444 new buses. MTC marked these with a green color scheme, later switching to cherry red for newer buses.

MTC's role extends beyond transport; it’s part of Chennai’s culture. Films like Madras to Pondicherry highlight bus routes, underscoring the service's daily importance.

In crises, MTC has been crucial, offering services during floods and COVID-19 lockdowns. Its adaptability makes it essential to Chennai’s urban life.

Today, MTC runs from 34 termini with four workshops, eight units for bus fitness, and two tire plants, supporting its vast operations and commitment to reliable service.

Despite successes, MTC seeks improvements. Cheralathan stressed the need for better fleet maintenance, as some buses, including the Volvo ACs, suffer from poor upkeep. The ongoing challenges of accessibility and maintenance show the hurdles MTC faces to meet a growing population's needs.
