Caitlin Clark looks set to hit the court for Indiana Fever against Los Angeles Sparks Wednesday night after missing two games with a back injury. The three-time All-Star hasn't played since aggravating it during a loss to Phoenix Mercury on June 24.
That game was rough. Alyssa Thomas of the Mercury got suspended after going for Clark's throat. Still, the Fever pulled through without her, grabbing two wins, including a solid 84-68 over Las Vegas Aces, bringing their season to 12-8.
Clark feels good about coming back, saying she's ready for the Sparks game. But she knows playing back-to-back games will be tough as she works on her fitness. If docs clear her,she plans to play about 20 minutes in her return.
Coach Stephanie White is clear: Clark's health comes first . Whether she plays depends on the medical green light. White says the team's strategy might change based on matchups, but rule is simple: if Clark's ready, she's in.
Last season was tough for Clark with injuries, playing only 13 out of 44 games. So the Fever are being careful, focusing on her long-term health. They've managed fine without her, with Kelsey Mitchell taking charge, averaging over 20 points per game . Aliyah Boston is also improving her outside shooting to back up her rebounding.
The Fever's recent run—three wins in four games—shows their depth even without Clark. When fit, she's vital, averaging 21.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 8.2 assists, ranking third in scoring and second in assists league-wide.
White also stresses team culture and player readiness. She sees Grace VanSlooten and DD Dantas as key to keeping a strong team vibe . VanSlooten could grow into a big role, while Dantas brings needed veteran savvy.
White says development spots are about prepping players for bigger roles. It's tough when they leave for other contracts, but the aim is to have them ready for any shot that comes. This shows Fever's dedication to nurturing talent and building a strong team .
