Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by daily trading volumes, is grappling with a potential security breach that has led to the freezing of $2.54 billion in funds by several crypto firms. The incident, which came to light on Thursday, has not been explicitly confirmed as a hack by Binance, though the company has acknowledged reports of a potential security issue.
A spokesperson for Binance assured users that their funds remain safe, stating that the company is actively investigating the situation. Binance also announced on X that its Binance Alpha trading had been temporarily suspended, with the total frozen funds verified at $2.54 billion.
Changpeng Zhao, Binance's founder and former CEO, echoed these reassurances, asserting that all customer funds would be fully covered. Zhao, who no longer manages the exchange, suggested that the incident might indeed be a hack.
In response to the potential breach, Circle Internet Group and Tether took swift action. Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire disclosed that the company had frozen over $800 million in USD Coin linked to the incident. Meanwhile, Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino revealed on X that his firm had frozen more than $1.5 billion of its stablecoin, USDT, potentially connected to the breach.
Further complicating the situation, Binance co-founder Yi He stated that Ripple, a firm tied to XRP and RLUSD, played a role in halting the movement of $200 million in funds associated with the possible attack. However, these frozen amounts may only represent a portion of the total assets impacted.
Crypto data provider Arkham Intelligence has identified nearly $6 billion in digital assets across 55 wallet addresses linked to the potential exploit. These assets include bitcoin, ether, solana, and various stablecoins. Arkham employs a combination of blockchain data analysis and community tips to track and flag crypto wallets.
Exploits in the crypto industry are not uncommon. In 2025, Bybit suffered losses of approximately $1.5 billion due to a hack, while Bitget recently lost more than $350 million in a cyber theft incident. Decentralized exchanges have also seen billions drained by malicious actors over recent years.
The potential breach has had immediate market repercussions, though specific figures for cryptocurrency value changes and stock impacts were not detailed in the source.
