A looming cyclonic storm over the Bay of Bengal is set to bring severe weather conditions to parts of India, with heavy rainfall expected in Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Telangana, and Chhattisgarh in the coming days. The storm, which is intensifying, is predicted to reach the Andhra Pradesh coast by October 28, 2026.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings as the depression over the Eastcentral and adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal has strengthened into a deep depression. Currently, it is located approximately 870 km east-southeast of Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The system is anticipated to evolve into a cyclonic storm by early Monday and further intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm by Tuesday morning.
Authorities expect the storm to make landfall between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, with wind speeds reaching 115-125 kmph, gusting up to 140 kmph. The Regional Meteorological Centre has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu's Chennai and other districts, prompting local administrations to take precautionary measures.
In anticipation of the storm, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has reviewed cyclone preparedness with officials. Measures include preventing fishermen from venturing into the sea, alerting residents in low-lying areas, and establishing toll-free numbers for emergency assistance.
Meanwhile, heavy rains have already impacted several regions. In Kerala, the IMD has issued alerts indicating the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 20 cm in 24 hours. An orange alert has been issued for 10 other districts, forecasting very heavy rain of 11-20 cm.
In Tamil Nadu, waterlogging has been reported in several areas, including Chennai, where local officials are working to clear blocked drainage systems. The Greater Chennai Corporation has urged residents to report tree falls or other emergencies during the monsoon.
In West Bengal, the IMD predicts heavy rain from October 28 to 30, with squally winds expected along the coast starting October 27. Fishermen have been advised to avoid sea activities during this period.
Delhi has also experienced a drop in temperature to 17°C following overnight rain and thunderstorms, with more rain expected. The city's air quality remains moderate, though some areas have reported poor air quality indices.
As the cyclonic storm continues to develop, authorities across affected regions are on high alert, preparing for potential impacts and ensuring public safety measures are in place.
