Price of domestic LPG cylinder in India jumped ₹29,this second hike in three months as crisis in West Asia keeps pushing energy costs higher. Total increase since conflict began now ₹89. Price for 14.2-kg cylinder in Delhi hits ₹942,₹941.50 in Mumbai, ₹968 in Kolkata,₹957.50 in Chennai.
Last adjustment was March 7,when government raised prices ₹60 per cylinder. Commercial LPG cylinder,5-kg free trade LPG (FTL) cylinder prices stayed same on Sunday. But they've seen big hikes since conflict started — commercial LPG up ₹1,345,FTL up ₹323.
State-owned Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) facing under-recoveries around ₹700 per domestic LPG cylinder, government says. Supply cost and selling price gap remains wide . Even with global prices surging 46%,domestic LPG prices still discounted by about 45% compared to international rates.
Experts worry ₹29 increase won't ease OMCs' financial strain. A senior VP at ICRA Limited noted most LPG used by households,which have been shielded from hikes. Current increase does little to cover under-recoveries — gap is huge with ₹700 per cylinder .
New prices for a 14.2-kg LPG cylinder in cities:
- Delhi: ₹942 (up from ₹913)
- Chennai: ₹957.50 (up from ₹928.50)
- Mumbai: ₹941.50 (up from ₹912.50)
- Kolkata: ₹968 (up from ₹939)
- Hyderabad: ₹994 (up from ₹965)
Government explained under-recoveries,cost of supplying 14.2-kg cylinder would top ₹1,600 if retail prices matched Saudi Contract Price from June . Effective price for first four cylinders under Ujjwala scheme ₹642,about 60% below actual international prices . Non-PMUY price ₹942 reflects 45% discount .
