  • Health officials stress importance of preventive measures to control spread
  • Experts warn influenza can lead to severe outcomes, requiring prompt medical attention

In July,Ernakulam district reported the highest incidence of influenza cases in Kerala, with total of 993 infections documented by July 27. This surge contributed to a statewide total of 2,468 cases for the month, alongside 24 fatalities attributed to the disease. The cumulative number of influenza cases in Kerala this year has reached 5,519,resulting in 60 deaths thus far .

The rise in cases has prompted health officials to emphasize importance of preventive measures. Recommendations include practicing cough etiquette, wearing masks, using sanitizers, and maintaining social distancing to curb the spread of infections. An official stated, "We have continued to give recommendations and advisories to the public to follow these precautions. This is essential to control the spread of infections."

Experts suggest that the increase in reported cases may stem from enhanced screening and testing efforts in the district. Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan, convener of the research cell at the Indian Medical Association in Kerala, cautioned against confusing influenza with the common cold. He noted that influenza can lead to severe outcomes, even in healthy individuals, warranting serious attention. "Influenza cases rise across the country with the onset of the monsoon. The symptoms include extreme weakness, high fever, and muscle ache with or without upper respiratory symptoms. Seeking medical help without delay is key," Dr. Jayadevan advised.

The geographical significance of Kochi, a major travel hub and referral center,is also factor contributing to the high number of cases in Ernakulam. prevalent influenza strains include H1N1, H3N2, and Influenza B,with H1N1 and H3N2 currently circulating widely .

Despite the alarming number of cases, Dr . Minu Mohan,an Assistant Professor in the Department of Community Medicine at the Government Medical College in Ernakulam, reassured that situation has not escalated to an epidemic level. She explained, "Like other viruses, influenza viruses accumulate mutations over time . This enables them to cause recurring outbreaks by evading immunity." As the monsoon season progresses, vigilance and adherence to health guidelines remain crucial in managing influenza outbreak.
