The Ethekwini Municipality is set to host 2026 Hollywoodbets Durban July this Saturday, with preparations in full swing. Mayor Cyril Xaba emphasized event's significance for local economy during a recent launch, highlighting the expected influx of over 40,000 visitors.

Xaba noted that the Durban July weekend transforms the city into a bustling hub of economic activity. The event is projected to generate direct spending of R230 million,contributing approximately R798 million to the local economy. This influx is anticipated to support around 1,105 jobs across various sectors.

“It remains one of the most important economic catalysts on Durban’s annual events calendar,” Xaba stated. He also pointed out that the Hollywoodbets Durban July serves as a vital platform for the creative economy, particularly through the Durban Fashion Fair program. Nine emerging designers will showcase their work at the event,having completed rigorous ten-month mentorship program.

The mayor expressed that initiatives like these empower local talent and strengthen their brands, further establishing Durban as a premier fashion destination. Comprehensive operational plans have been developed in collaboration with municipal directorates, law enforcement,and event organizers to ensure a smooth experience for attendees .

Stephen Marshall,Head of Major Events at Race Coast,announced that 29 independently operated hospitality venues and VIP marquees will be available, supported by over 9,000 event staff and additional 1,000 security personnel. “While every owner,trainer,jockey,breeder, and groom dreams of winning the R10 million Hollywoodbets Durban July, the event simultaneously creates opportunities across multiple sectors,” he said.

The prize for the race has doubled to R10 million,making it the richest horse race in Africa . Devin Heffer, Hollywoodbets Brand and Communications Manager,noted that significant investments have been made in infrastructure, including upgrades to grandstands and enhanced spectator facilities .

Naomi Crous, Chairperson of Umhlanga Tourism,remarked on the event's importance for the tourism sector. She expects strong occupancy levels and increased business for hotels and restaurants in the area. “Beyond the economic impact,the event provides an excellent opportunity to showcase Umhlanga and surrounding areas’ hospitality,beautiful coastline,and diverse experiences to visitors from across South Africa and abroad,” Crous added .
