As a heatwave grips France, authorities have issued red alerts for nearly half the country, including the capital,Paris,in anticipation of soaring temperatures on Monday. The heatwave, which has already sent temperatures in Bordeaux soaring to 40°C (104°F), is expected to bring record highs across the region .
In response to the extreme weather conditions, the French government has prohibited alcohol consumption in public spaces during the annual Fête de la Musique,a popular music festival that attracts millions nationwide. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu's office announced that all state-organized events will refrain from serving alcohol, a measure aimed at ensuring emergency and healthcare services remain focused on the most vulnerable populations.
The heatwave has been attributed to hot air moving north from the Sahara Desert, creating stagnant layer of heat over western and central Europe. This weather phenomenon has not only impacted France but has also led to red alerts in eight Italian cities, including Bologna and Milan, and similar warnings in several regions of Spain, where temperatures are projected to reach 40°C.
As heatwave continues to escalate,it has already disrupted government services in France, resulting in the cancellation of numerous train services and the suspension of classes. The national weather service,Météo-France, has indicated uncertainty regarding the duration of this heatwave, which is estimated to affect about 75% of the population.
To assist residents and visitors in coping with the extreme heat, Parisian authorities are keeping parks and gardens open overnight . Fête de la Musique, celebrated for over 40 years on the summer solstice, is expected to draw large crowds despite the alcohol ban. Last year, approximately two million people participated in the festivities in Paris alone.
As heatwave persists, many are seeking relief by jumping into Canal St. Martin in Paris. The situation remains critical, with officials urging the public to take precautions against the rising temperatures. With forecast predicting a peak on Monday, the nation braces for what could be one of the hottest days in recent history.
