H1N1 cases surge in several states, experts advise caution for at-risk children

Key Takeaways

  • H1N1 cases surge in India, particularly in Delhi and Mumbai
  • Health officials stress caution for vulnerable populations
  • Early testing and vaccination are crucial for at-risk groups
  • Kerala reports severe flu situation with high fatalities

As cases of H1N1 rise across several Indian states, health experts are urging caution but not panic. The national capital,Delhi, has reported over 1,300 infections this monsoon season, a staggering sixfold increase compared to the same period last year.

By early August,Delhi had documented 1,344 cases of H1N1,sharply up from 229 during same timeframe in 2022. In response, government hospitals have established dedicated isolation wards to manage the influx of patients. Health officials are particularly concerned about vulnerable populations, including children with asthma and older adults, who may require additional precautions.

In Mumbai, the situation mirrors that of Delhi. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation reported 309 cases of H1N1 between June 1 and August 15, a significant rise from 72 cases during the same period in 2022. This trend reflects a broader increase in influenza-like illnesses, viral fevers, and respiratory infections across the country.

Doctors in Bengaluru have noted a similar uptick in respiratory ailments among children. However, testing for H1N1 is limited to those exhibiting severe symptoms. At the Vani Vilas Women and Children Hospital, respiratory complaints and fever account for nearly 80% of pediatric outpatient visits. Only children with pronounced symptoms are being tested for H1N1.

In Bengaluru’s Clarence High School, over 500 cases of influenza-like illness have been reported, with two confirmed H1N1 cases among students . This has raised concerns about the potential for transmission in crowded settings such as classrooms. The Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health is also seeing a steady stream of viral fever cases, confirming two to three H1N1 cases daily.

Private pediatricians are observing an even sharper increase in cases. Vikas Satwik,a senior pediatrician at Motherhood Hospitals, noted that school-aged children represent a significant portion of cases. Sujatha Thyagarajan, head of pediatric intensive care at Aster Women and Children Hospital, remarked that H1N1 infections are occurring earlier than usual this season.

In Chennai, cases of H1N1 have been on the rise for past two weeks. J.K. Reddy,a senior pediatric consultant at Apollo Children’s Hospital, emphasized importance of early testing, recommending that children suspected of having influenza be tested within 24 to 48 hours of symptom onset. He noted that antiviral medications are most effective when administered early.

Despite the increase in flu-like symptoms, routine testing for H1N1 is not conducted in many government hospitals, complicating efforts to track the virus. Janani Sankar, medical director at the Kanchi Kamakoti CHILDS Trust Hospital, reported that most children are treated as outpatients, with only those exhibiting severe symptoms requiring hospitalization .

In Telangana, the number of H1N1 cases remains lower than last year. Ravinder Nayak, the state's Director of Public Health and Family Welfare, confirmed that while outpatient consultations for viral fevers have increased, there has not been a corresponding rise in H1N1 cases. Vijay Kumar, superintendent of Niloufer Hospital, noted a similar trend, indicating that the situation is being closely monitored.

In Kerala, however, situation has been more severe. The state has reported a cumulative total of 7,421 influenza cases and 88 deaths this year, with the majority of fatalities occurring among individuals over 50 . Public health experts are advocating for annual flu vaccinations for the elderly to mitigate mortality rates and reduce hospitalizations .

As the flu season progresses, health officials continue to stress the importance of early intervention and vaccination, particularly for at-risk groups. The rise in H1N1 cases serves as reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by respiratory infections, especially in vulnerable populations.
