BRIC Team reports: The BJP swept the mayoral polls in two Haryana municipal corporations on Wednesday (May 13, 2026) and led comfortably in a third, as counting continued for elections to seven civic bodies, including three corporations.In Ambala, BJP’s Akshita Saini trounced Congress candidate Kulvinder Kaur Saini by 21,358 votes to win the mayoral seat, reserved for a Backward Class (B) woman. Sonipat saw a high-stakes rematch between the same candidates who contested last year’s mayoral bypoll. Outgoing BJP Mayor Rajiv Jain defeated Congress’ Kamal Dewan again, this time by 23,247 votes.
Jain had won the 2025 bypoll by over 38,000 votes.Counting was still on in Panchkula, where BJP’s Shyam Lal Bansal held a commanding 26,977-vote lead over Congress’ Sudha Bhardwaj, former Haryana Mahila Congress president, with seven rounds left.The BJP also took the president’s post in Rewari municipal council and in Dharuhera and Sampla municipal committees.But the day’s upset came from Uklana. Independent Reema Soni, a 23-year-old student, stunned the BJP by defeating its candidate Nikita Goel by 2,806 votes for the municipal committee president’s post.Polling for the seven bodies — three municipal corporations and four councils and committees — was held on May 10.
