Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced Friday that 500 kg of GI-tagged ‘Tezpur Litchis’ are heading to Singapore, marking a big win for state's agriculture. consignment took off from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, showcasing international demand for Assam's premium produce.
At flag-off ceremony, Sarma expressed pride in exporting the 'Piyaji' variety, emphasizing its importance for local farmers. Such moves could motivate more to tap global markets. "The litchi produced in Tezpur has immense demand outside the country," he stated, noting a recent 1,000 kg shipment to Dubai days earlier.
The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA),under Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry, facilitated both exports. Litchis will be flown to Singapore. Sarma mentioned Singapore High Commissioner already wants another 500 kg. But current production limits larger shipments — Tezpur litchis come from about 3,000 trees only.
Despite high demand for Tezpur litchis within Assam and across India,Sarma explained state can't export larger quantities this year. He recently sent samples to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other ministers, all praising fruit's quality and taste.
Sarma believes with strategic planning,Assam can expand exports beyond litchis to ‘kaji nemu’ (lemons) and ‘bhut jolokia’ (chillies). Even jackfruit could find market abroad. But he stressed need for strict export standards, especially on fertilizers and production consistency.
Chief Minister also highlighted Assam's potential in ginger cultivation and export. He committed to boosting agricultural exports in coming years . In a post on X,he remarked,"From ginger to lemons to litchis,Assam's agricultural products have immense potential and high demand in global markets." He concluded by expressing confidence that Tezpur litchis would impress consumers with unique flavor…
