US businessman accused of masterminding massive Medicare fraud is back in US after being caught in Turkiye . Ibrahim Khaldoon Hilmi allegedly stole $3.7 billion from healthcare system. FBI says he was on the run for over a year before capture.
Hilmi, from Delray Beach, Florida, had companies that seemed legit like Sunshine Senior Solutions. But prosecutors claim it was front to drain taxpayer money. Fraud involved fake claims for medical gear like knee braces, catheters — often for patients who didn't exist or never wanted them.
Years went by with Hilmi's scheme under radar. He used multiple legit-looking firms to cover tracks. Real business names, medical categories gave claims a veneer of truth, letting fraud thrive unnoticed for long time .
May 2025, as feds closed in,Hilmi fled US . Turkish authorities found him, arrested him. FBI's Critical Incident Response Group led operation to bring him back. Seen in light blue detention clothes, shackled, flanked by agents upon return.
FBI Director Kash Patel announced capture, highlighting FBI Miami,Justice Dept,Turkish authorities' teamwork. US Ambassador to Turkiye,Tom Barrack, also played role. Hilmi's capture follows Herbert Kimble's recent arrest — both cases total nearly $5 billion in alleged theft.
Hilmi now faces federal Medicare fraud charges . Initial court appearance soon . Recovery of funds uncertain. Convicted Medicare fraudsters face harsh penalties — big fines, long prison terms. More details expected from prosecutors in coming days.
This is part of Operation Gold Rush — federal crackdown on transnational crime networks exploiting Medicare . Many charged nationwide. Patel stressed commitment to catching those who rob US taxpayers: “any criminal actor who steals from the American taxpayer will be caught, no matter where they try to hide.”
But clemency for fraud convicts stirs debate. Trump granted clemency to over 70 fraudsters, including Philip Esformes, linked to $1.3 billion Medicare fraud. His 2020 sentence commutation raises questions about justice consistency in healthcare fraud cases…
