Indian shooting legend Jaspal Rana has died at 49,losing battle with cardiac complications just days before his mother,Shyama Devi, also passed after a long illness. Jaspal's death on June 12 followed an emergency heart procedure, leaving a deep void in sports.
Shyama Devi died on Sunday, June 28,2026 — date marking what would have been Jaspal's 50th birthday. Her passing adds to Rana family's grief, especially for Jaspal's father,Narayan Singh Rana,already mourning his son. Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami, sent condolences, honoring memories of both Jaspal and his mother.
Jaspal Rana was a giant in Indian shooting, known for his stunning feats, including three golds and a silver at 2006 Doha Asian Games,where he equaled world record. His influence went beyond competition; he turned to coaching,guiding Manu Bhaker to two bronze medals at Paris Olympics . At his death,he was high-performance coach for Indian pistol shooters.
His health problems started on Indian team's return flight from ISSF World Cup in Munich, Germany. After landing in New Delhi, he was hospitalized, underwent procedure to install stent for cardiac blockage. Jaspal leaves behind his wife,Reena Rana, daughter Devanshi, son Yuvraj, and two siblings,Sushma Singh and Subhash Rana.
