Karthik Subbaraj's latest film, Dorothy, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 12, 2026. This film, graced by a soundtrack from the legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja, is the first Tamil feature to make its debut at TIFF in ten years.
Taking place in rural Tamil Nadu during the early 1990s, Dorothy tells the story of two boys, Karthi and Subbu, grappling with a challenging environment. The plot thickens when Dorothy, played by Keerthy Suresh, encounters a misfortune that plunges the story into a world filled with patriarchal dominance and violence. The film also features Sananth and Rishikanth in significant roles.
The premiere at Toronto's Scotiabank Theatre saw attendance from the director, lead actors, and producers Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain. Karthik Subbaraj shared his excitement about the debut, highlighting how Dorothy is deeply connected to his cultural roots, while its themes of friendship and human connection strike a universal chord. He underlined the importance of Ilaiyaraaja's music in accompanying the film's narrative journey.
Producer Jyoti Deshpande, President of Jio Studios, emphasized the film's broad appeal, suggesting that cinema breaks language barriers when the emotions are relatable. She lauded Karthik's storytelling for exploring themes of friendship, identity, and dignity, which resonate beyond the film's linguistic boundaries. Deshpande expressed pride in presenting this deeply human story to audiences worldwide.
Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain, representing Sikhya Entertainment, spoke about TIFF's role in their journey and the special significance of bringing Dorothy to the festival. They described the film as an exploration of identity and belonging, highlighting the collaboration with Karthik and Jio Studios to bring a compelling Indian narrative to a global platform.
The film's score, composed by Ilaiyaraaja, features 18 original tracks. This soundtrack was recently performed live in Chennai, where musicians played for 40 minutes straight, providing an immersive auditory preview of the film's atmosphere.
Produced by Jyoti Deshpande, Guneet Monga Kapoor, and Achin Jain in partnership with Dhammam Films, Dorothy is set to be released in theaters on September 25. This marks Karthik Subbaraj's return to cinema after his previous film, Retro, starring Suriya, Pooja Hegde, and Joju George, which hit screens on May 1, 2025.
