The people of Kerala are buzzing over Anil Menon, a NASA astronaut with roots in the state, who took off for the International Space Station (ISS) Tuesday on the Soyuz MS-29 spacecraft . Menon,49, is great-grandson of Sir C. Sankaran Nair,former Congress party chief in Kerala, sparking pride across the region .
Kerala's Governor,Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, shared his congratulations in a heartfelt Facebook post. He remembered visiting Menon’s ancestral Chettur House in Ottapalam last year to honor his great-grandfather. “Hearty congratulations and best wishes to Anil Menon,the pride of Kerala,in his space odyssey,” Arlekar wrote.
Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan praised Menon too, calling his journey to ISS a “truly historic milestone” for the state. The buzz around Menon’s launch shows his deep ties to his heritage,born in Minneapolis to Indian and Ukrainian immigrant parents.
Menon’s career shines with achievements in medicine and aerospace. An emergency medicine physician and a colonel in the U.S . Space Force, he has a rich service history. His military stint includes Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom, and he helped with humanitarian efforts like aiding climbers on Mount Everest with Himalayan Rescue Association .
His space journey began at NASA in 2014 as a flight surgeon,supporting astronauts on the ISS. In 2018,he moved to SpaceX, crucial in developing its medical program and preparing for its first human spaceflights. Menon became a NASA astronaut in December 2021, diving into a tough two-year training program .
Space runs in the family; his wife,Anna Wilhelm,joined the Polaris Dawn mission in September 2024,a private SpaceX flight lasting nearly five days . This space link adds weight to Menon’s achievements.
