The Kerala government is set to establish 300 Jawaharlal Nehru Centres for Scientific Temper throughout the state . This initiative aims to promote rational and evidence-based thinking among students and the general public, countering the rise of misinformation.
These centres will function as a hub-and-spoke model, connecting schools, colleges, libraries, and other institutions. The goal is to create a network that fosters scientific temper, a value championed by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
Officials have completed preliminary discussions regarding the framework and implementation of this ambitious project. The government plans to launch pilot projects at select locations within three months, paving the way for a broader rollout across Kerala.
Approximately 1.5 million people, particularly youths, are expected to benefit from this initiative . Activities will include workshops and programs designed to strengthen evidence-based thinking and encourage innovation. The project was a significant promise in the United Democratic Front’s election manifesto and was recently highlighted in the State Budget by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan.
As part of the initiative, the government will produce educational materials such as books, posters, and digital content focused on scientific temper. Training will be provided to a dedicated pool of educators and facilitators to ensure effective implementation.
Public institutions, libraries, and educational establishments will partner in this effort. A state-level nodal agency will oversee coordination, aiming to institutionalize the program as long-term strategy for promoting scientific thinking across various age groups.
The proposed centres will host awareness campaigns, competitions, and citizen science initiatives. They will also introduce awards to honor individuals and institutions that significantly contribute to the promotion of scientific temper. A crucial aspect of this initiative is to dispel myths and misinformation through evidence-based public engagement.
In addition, the program seeks to cultivate an academic ecosystem that allows students and the general public to engage with emerging technologies. By nurturing scientific curiosity and research aptitude, the Kerala government hopes to inspire a new generation of innovators and critical thinkers.
