Heavy rainfall in Kodagu has led to the district administration declaring a holiday for all anganwadi centres, schools, and colleges on Wednesday. This decision, made by Deputy Commissioner Somashekar, aims to ensure the safety of students amid concerns over potential rain-related incidents .
In the last 24 hours,Kodagu experienced significant rainfall, with Bhagamandala recording an impressive 165 mm,marking one of the highest daily totals in recent weeks. Other areas also saw substantial precipitation, including Ponnampet at 125 mm and Hudikeri at 89 mm. Overall, the district averaged 57.20 mm of rain during this period.
The overnight downpour caused notable damage to infrastructure and property. In Kolthodu Baigodu village,a road collapsed due to the relentless rain. Meanwhile, in Bommadu village,a tree uprooted by strong winds fell on a house, partially damaging it. Revenue department officials have since assessed the damage at the site.
As monsoon season progresses, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed in Kodagu to manage potential emergencies. With the situation evolving, local officials are on high alert and are closely monitoring conditions . They have urged residents to adhere to safety advisories, particularly regarding water bodies .
In an effort to prevent accidents, the administration has imposed restrictions on unauthorized access to rivers, streams, waterfalls, and other vulnerable areas. Activities such as bathing, swimming, and adventure sports in these locations are prohibited. Violators of these restrictions may face legal consequences. Recently, two engineering students from Andhra Pradesh were fined after they were rescued from the turbulent waters of Mallalli Falls, highlighting dangers posed by the current weather conditions.
Officials continue to emphasize the importance of public safety during this intense monsoon period. The ongoing rainfall not only poses risks to individuals but also threatens to exacerbate existing infrastructure challenges in the region. As community grapples with these issues, the focus remains on safeguarding lives and property .
