Kohl’s Taps Fashion Tech Veteran Steven Dee as New CTO to Drive Digital Transformation

Kohl’s is making a bold bet on technology leadership with the appointment of Steven Dee as its new Chief Technology Officer, effective August 25. Dee brings a wealth of experience from some of the world’s leading fashion and retail brands, including Nike, Hayneedle, Rodan + Fields and J.Crew, where he helped steer major digital and e-commerce initiatives. He will report directly to interim CEO Michael Bender, signaling Kohl’s growing emphasis on tech-driven strategy.

The move comes at a pivotal moment for the retail giant. Like many traditional retailers, Kohl’s has faced mounting pressure to adapt to evolving consumer shopping habits, heightened competition from online marketplaces, and the increasing role of AI in retail personalization and logistics. Dee’s appointment suggests that Kohl’s is doubling down on technology as a key growth driver.

Over the past decade, Dee has built a reputation as a transformative leader, championing innovation and digital first customer experiences. At Nike, he played a role in integrating data-driven insights to refine supply chains and online sales. At J.Crew and Hayneedle, he focused on leveraging analytics and mobile-first design to elevate user engagement. These experiences position him well to tackle Kohl’s ongoing challenges, including boosting online sales, streamlining operations and revitalizing its brand appeal in a crowded marketplace.

Kohl’s leadership change also reflects the broader shift in retail toward advanced technology adoption. From AI-driven inventory management to personalized marketing and omnichannel strategies, tech leadership is no longer just an operational need but a competitive differentiator.

Interim CEO Michael Bender emphasized that Dee’s expertise will be central to modernizing the company’s infrastructure: Steven’s experience with leading global brands and his ability to blend technology with customer insight will help us position Kohl’s for long term growth.

As retailers race to innovate, Kohl’s move to bring in a seasoned fashion tech leader could mark the start of a significant digital transformation. Industry watchers will be keeping a close eye on whether this leadership shake up helps the company reclaim market share and reconnect with its increasingly tech-savvy customers.
