The Maayan comic series,steeped in Kerala folklore,made waves at Kochi Comic Con. Launched by Carmond Infinity, a Kochi-based studio,it follows Raman,an apprentice poet,and Maari,a Kalari warrior,through 15th-century Calicut . They navigate identity and magic.
Named after legendary sorcerer-warriors from Kalabhra dynasty,the series digs into hidden forces shaping its characters. Led by Visakh PK and Ananthakrishnan TU,the team weaves local culture with universal themes like witchcraft and martial arts.
Actress Anarkali Marikar launched first edition in February,with fifth issue just out. Creators aim to echo Kerala's rich history, inspired by popular figures like Odiyan from local tales.
Visakh explained how they drew on successful Japanese legend adaptations in anime. In December 2025,they pitched to producer Rijas Sulaiman Nalakath, and shared samples at Animators Guild India Fest in Mumbai. Feedback from makers of Crayon Shin Chan and One Piece boosted their confidence.
Previously, Carmond Infinity worked with Weekend Blockbusters on Captain Raaj. Now,they've shifted focus to an animated adaptation. Visakh stressed rural settings in superhero tales,saying urban lacks distinctiveness for compelling characters.
He noted local folklore,like Chaathan,Malayali goblin equivalent,brings fresh excitement. Films like Minnal Murali and Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra show growing appetite for such stories. Filmmakers Basil Joseph and Dominic Arun have paved way for culture-rooted characters.
Despite challenges for independent creators in Kerala,like funding and sustainable models,Maayan team has built loyal base. They're expanding from 25 to 50 issues.
Visakh acknowledged hurdles at events like Comic Con or Indie Comix Fest . He praised Malay Publications,which makes Amar Chithra Kadha in Malayalam,for supporting the industry.
Looking ahead,creators are talking with producers and directors for film adaptation. Visakh thinks it could take two years but says strong following is key for success.
