Marjane Satrapi, acclaimed Iranian-French cartoonist and filmmaker behind Persepolis,has died at 56 . French presidency confirmed Thursday. Called her a key figure in French culture,champion of freedom.
Satrapi's work struck a chord globally, earning her wide acclaim. President Emmanuel Macron and wife sent condolences, praising how she turned her Iranian childhood into a story for all. “Her passing marks loss of a leading cultural figure,” presidency said.
Reports link her death to deep sorrow after losing her husband, Swedish film producer Mattias Ripa, in April 2025. Friends said she “died of sadness,” noting emotional toll.
Born November 22,1969,in Rasht, Iran, Satrapi's early years shaped by Islamic Revolution. Parents sent her to Vienna in 1983 to escape rising extremism. But feeling alone, she returned to Iran in 1989 to study at Tehran University, earning a degree in visual communications.
In 1994,she moved to France,honing her artistic voice . Persepolis,her most famous work,tells of her revolution experiences,praised for poignant storytelling. Film adaptation took home Film Critics Grand Prix at Cannes 2007,won a César for best adapted screenplay in 2008. Nominated for Academy Award for best animated feature same year.
Satrapi's art went beyond Persepolis. Her graphic novels like Broderies and Poulet aux prunes became films. As director, she made La Bande des Jotas and Radioactive, a biopic on Marie Curie .
In 2023,she spearheaded book Femme, vie, liberté,working with artists,academics to highlight Iran protests after Mahsa Amini's death. Criticized Iranian regime's repression,especially against women.
Elected to French Academy of Fine Arts in 2024,offered Legion of Honor. She declined,citing France's lack of support for Iranian democracy fight. In letter to French authorities, she stressed true backing for Iran's women's revolution needs more than gestures.
Her human rights work got recognized with Spain's Princess of Asturias award in 2024, celebrated as key voice for civic engagement,especially for women.
Satrapi's legacy as artist,activist will live on, her works continue to inspire,challenge societal norms. Her Instagram echoed her deep sorrow after husband's death,with a poignant note: “Because I have lost the love of my life.”
