Meta shares drop amid AI spending concerns

Key Takeaways

  • •Meta's stock drops 9% due to AI-related expense concerns
  • •$135 billion market value loss, comparable to Uber's entire market cap
  • •Meta's AI tool Muse could generate significant revenue if adopted
  • •Legal challenges and market jitters contribute to investor anxiety

Meta Platforms Inc. faced a rough week, with its stock experiencing a significant drop as worries about AI-related spending spooked investors. Despite the drop, the company's future potential remains a focus for many investors.

The tech behemoth, with a market cap of a staggering $1.65 trillion, saw its value shrink by $135 billion over just four trading days. That's like losing the whole market cap of Uber. This slide followed Meta's announcement of hefty investments in artificial intelligence, which unsettled some investors.

Meta's AI dreams are pinned on Muse, its personal AI agent. Muse isn't your run-of-the-mill chatbot; it aims to be a proactive digital assistant, handling tasks like opening browsers, sending emails, and booking travel. The tool's economic potential is huge, with some estimates suggesting it could rake in substantial revenue if widely adopted.

Meta's vast ecosystem, spanning Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, counts 3.6 billion daily active users. If Muse captures just 1% of these users, it could potentially bring in $4.3 billion a year. A wider reach of 20% could see revenues skyrocket to $43.2 billion annually, underscoring the massive opportunity.

But several issues contributed to the recent sell-off. A $25 billion lawsuit in New Mexico is a looming legal threat, and a deal with its founder to address possible tax liabilities has raised eyebrows. On top of that, concerns about Meta's debt levels and the broader market's AI jitters have fueled investor unease.

However, Meta's current valuation reflects many of these risks. The stock trades at 20 times its fiscal year earnings and under 17 times its estimated earnings for 2027, suggesting these headwinds are already priced in. Some investors are taking advantage of this by employing strategies like selling December strangles, specifically the 580/745 strangle, eyeing profits within the stock's current trading range.

This strategy involves collecting roughly $21.30 per share, based on recent closing prices. This tactic allows for potential gains as long as Meta's stock stays within its one-year highs and lows, which is currently the case.

Though Meta is navigating a challenging period, its underlying growth narrative remains strong. The company's AI investments and extensive user base lay a solid foundation for future growth, making it an appealing option for investors who can handle some short-term volatility.
