Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the new Bhogapuram International Airport near Visakhapatnam by end of July 2026,according to K . Rammohan Naidu, the Union Civil Aviation Minister . During a review meeting on July 7,Naidu confirmed that airport is ready for operations after completing all necessary inspections and tests.
The airport, constructed by the GMR Group at a cost of ₹4,500 crore, spans 2,200 acres provided by the state government. Located approximately 60 kilometers from existing Visakhapatnam airport,it is strategically positioned on the Visakhapatnam-Srikakulam highway, enhancing connectivity to the region .
Naidu expressed satisfaction with the facilities available for passengers, including lounges and other amenities. He noted that the state government has also developed new access roads to ensure smooth travel to airport . However, the launch date has faced multiple delays, with earlier expectations set for July 5 and then July 26,neither of which has been confirmed.
While the airport's opening is anticipated to boost economic activity in North Andhra region, concerns have arisen regarding airport's User Development Fee (UDF). The Airport Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) has approved fees of ₹835 for domestic departures, ₹355 for domestic arrivals, and significantly higher charges for international travel—₹1,255 for international departures and ₹545 for arrivals . This pricing structure has drawn criticism from air travelers' associations, who argue that fees are the highest in India and are calling for reductions.
Despite the ongoing discussions about the UDF,Naidu emphasized that the fee was determined after careful consideration of airport's viability and operational costs . As the launch date remains uncertain, sources within Telugu Desam Party indicate that a new date may be announced soon, although the Prime Minister's Office has yet to confirm any specifics.
