Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Kyrgyzstan, a move anticipated to significantly enhance economic ties and investment between the two nations. Kyrgyzstan's Investment Minister Ravshanbek Sabirov expressed optimism on Saturday, highlighting the potential for increased collaboration in sectors such as infrastructure, renewable energy, tourism, technology, and agro-industry.
Sabirov emphasized the importance of Modi's visit, describing it as a historic event that could elevate bilateral cooperation to unprecedented levels. He noted that the visit is expected to strengthen the investment landscape and economic partnership between Kyrgyzstan and India. In 2024, bilateral trade between the two countries reached approximately $91 million, with Kyrgyzstan exporting goods like honey, dried fruits, beans, and gold to India, while Indian products such as cashews are present in the Kyrgyz market.
The minister highlighted the longstanding warm relations between Kyrgyzstan and India, underscored by strong cultural ties. Many Kyrgyz citizens are familiar with Indian films and actors, a legacy from the Soviet era. Sabirov expressed confidence that Kyrgyzstan would extend a warm welcome to Modi, reflecting the friendly relations between the two countries.
Kyrgyzstan aims to deepen cooperation with India through business forums, seminars, and training programs, while also enhancing cultural and strategic connections. President Sadyr Japarov prioritizes investment as a key driver for modernizing the economy and creating jobs. Sabirov pointed out the significant potential for collaboration in higher education, with many Indian students already pursuing medical studies in Kyrgyzstan. Tourism, medical tourism, and industrial cooperation were also identified as promising areas for partnership.
Investment Opportunities
Sabirov believes that Modi's visit will draw international attention to Kyrgyzstan, showcasing the country's investment opportunities to Indian businesses. He highlighted the existing legal framework in Kyrgyzstan, which includes laws on investments, public-private partnerships, and venture financing, designed to facilitate foreign investment. The country is particularly eager to attract Indian companies to sectors such as infrastructure, hydropower, small hydropower plants, renewable energy, tourism, and the agro-industrial sector.
The Kyrgyz government is committed to supporting joint investment projects at every stage. “We will accompany investors, provide assistance, and monitor the implementation process, ” Sabirov stated, emphasizing the government's dedication to fostering a conducive environment for foreign investors.
