Moscow Exchange (MOEX) plans to introduce cryptocurrency trading on December 1, 2023, following an announcement by a senior managing director. The move comes as part of a broader effort to integrate digital assets into Russia's primary financial market infrastructure.
Active testing for the new trading platform is currently underway, with the exchange aiming to ensure a seamless transition for market participants. This development marks a significant step in expanding MOEX's fintech capabilities, aligning with global trends towards digital asset adoption.
In recent months, MOEX has been actively enhancing its trading offerings. On August 14, the exchange announced plans to shift the start of its main trading session for key markets to 9:00 a.m. Moscow time, effective September 14. This change is part of a long-term strategy to move towards 24-hour trading, which MOEX expects to achieve within the next two to two and a half years.
Despite these advancements, the Russian government has imposed restrictions on cryptocurrency activities. A ban on cryptocurrency mining in the Moscow and Kursk regions took effect on August 15, reflecting ongoing regulatory challenges in the sector.
MOEX's expansion into cryptocurrency trading is not its only recent innovation. The exchange plans to launch an AI-formed stock index in 2026, highlighting its commitment to leveraging technology in financial markets. Additionally, MOEX has been diversifying its product offerings, with recent introductions such as futures trading on the South Korean market in July and orange juice futures in June.
Private investors have shown increasing interest in MOEX's offerings. In September, investments in mutual investment funds tripled to 19.7 billion rubles, indicating a growing appetite for diverse financial products among Russian investors.
Amid these developments, MOEX continues to adapt its methodologies and expand its trading sessions. On December 8, the exchange will update its methodology for calculating bond yields, and it has recently admitted Ozon shares to additional trading sessions.
While geopolitical tensions have occasionally impacted the Russian stock market, as seen in November 2025 when MOEX recoiled to 2610, the exchange remains focused on innovation and growth. The introduction of cryptocurrency trading is expected to attract new participants and enhance the exchange's position in the global financial landscape.
