Mukesh Ambani, the Indian billionaire, has further solidified his position in the business world as Jio Platforms made a strong market debut. The telecom and digital services giant, backed by Meta and Google, saw its shares rise by 3.3% on Thursday, a day after listing at a premium of over 25% to its IPO price. This surge catapulted its market capitalization to 13.05 trillion rupees ($137.1 billion).
Ambani's flagship company, Reliance Industries, already holds the title of the most valued firm in India. It retains a significant stake of over 64% in Jio Platforms post-IPO. The listing was an emotional moment for Ambani, who was moved to tears as his three children recounted the journey of building Jio and pledged to deliver value to investors over the next five decades.
Analysts are optimistic about Jio's financial future, expecting a boost in free cash flow as the IPO funds are earmarked for repaying legacy telecom debt. The company’s 5G investment cycle is also winding down. However, experts caution that much of Jio's value is already reflected in its current valuation, which now rivals global telecom giants. Anurag Singh, founder and managing partner of Ansid Capital, noted that Jio's market cap places it alongside American telecom heavyweights like AT&T and Verizon Communications, with market caps of $139 billion and $179 billion, respectively.
Singh highlighted that Jio's minimal share dilution of just 3% has effectively eliminated nearly 300 billion rupees of debt. He remarked on the valuation, suggesting that if the Indian economy were to match the American economy, this is the level at which investors are buying into Jio.
Looking to the future, Akash Ambani, the 35-year-old managing director of Jio Platforms and Mukesh Ambani's eldest son, outlined ambitious plans for the company. He emphasized Jio's role in democratizing transformative technologies in India over the next decade. Key growth areas include artificial intelligence, cloud services, connected devices, and even satellite communications, which recently drew criticism from Elon Musk over delays in launching Starlink in India.
Vaqarjaved Khan, a senior analyst at Angel One, pointed out that Jio's massive customer base of over half a billion, along with its operating margins of 52% and net leverage of 0.36 times, brings a unique scale to Indian equities. He added that with a price-to-earnings ratio of 34 times, future returns will hinge on improving average revenue per user and expanding AI services.
In the wake of Jio's successful listing, the Reliance Group has seen its market value soar, positioning it as a leading conglomerate in India, according to a Bloomberg report.
