Pakistan has been penalized for a slow over-rate following their 64-run defeat to India in the opening match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. match took place at Edgbaston in Birmingham on June 14,where India set target of 171 runs and bowled out Pakistan for just 106 .
Match officials,including on-field umpires Claire Polosak and Jacquline Williams, along with third umpire Eloise Sheridan and fourth umpire Sue Redfern, determined that Pakistan fell short by one over after accounting for time allowances. As a result, match referee Trudy Anderson imposed fine of five percent of the team’s match fee. Skipper Fatima Sana acknowledged the team's failure to maintain the required over rate during an internal hearing.
In the match, India’s performance was highlighted by opener Smriti Mandhana, who scored an impressive 68 runs. Her partnership with captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who contributed 36 runs, was crucial,as they combined for a 91-run stand that bolstered India’s total. Deepti Sharma also shone with the ball,taking five wickets to dismantle the Pakistani batting order.
This penalty adds to Pakistan's woes after a disappointing start in the tournament. The team will need to regroup quickly as they prepare for their next match against the Netherlands on June 17. India,on the other hand, will aim to build on their strong opening performance as they continue their campaign in tournament.
