The iconic shirt worn by Brazilian football legend Pele during the 1958 World Cup final has fetched a staggering $4.9 million at auction. This sale, conducted by Sotheby’s in New York, marks the highest price ever paid for a piece of memorabilia associated with Pele, who passed away in 2022.
The shirt gained its value not only from its association with Pele but also due to the historic match it represents. At just 17 years old,Pele scored two goals in Brazil's 5-2 victory over Sweden, securing nation’s first World Cup title. Sotheby’s noted that the images from that final have become some of the most reproduced in football history, emphasizing the shirt's significance: "This shirt was there."
During the auction, the shirt attracted considerable interest, receiving ten bids from over five bidders. Its previous auction price in 2004 was a mere £70,505 (approximately $105,600),highlighting the dramatic increase in its value over the years.
Pele, whose full name was Edson Arantes do Nascimento,is celebrated as one of the greatest footballers of all time. His achievements on the pitch have left an indelible mark on the sport, and he remains a beloved figure in Brazil and beyond.
Despite the record-setting sale,Pele's shirt does not hold the title for most expensive piece of sports memorabilia ever sold. That distinction belongs to a baseball jersey worn by Babe Ruth during 1932 World Series, which sold for $24.1 million in 2024 . Other notable sales include Michael Jordan's 1998 NBA Finals jersey, which went for $10.1 million, and Diego Maradona's jersey from the 1986 World Cup quarterfinal against England, fetching $9.2 million.
The auction results reflect the growing market for sports memorabilia, where items associated with legendary athletes can command extraordinary prices. As collectors and fans seek to own a piece of sporting history, value of such artifacts continues to rise, driven by nostalgia and enduring legacy of icons like Pele.
