During a historic visit to New Zealand,Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday hailed the new Free Trade Agreement (FTA) as a big step forward in India-New Zealand relations. First Indian PM visit in four decades . Modi called it momentum boost for bilateral ties.
Modi thanked New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon for quick FTA conclusion,noting it began during Luxon's India visit last year . "The way all of New Zealand united to bring the FTA to fruition in such a short time,perhaps a global first for such a swift success,is remarkable," Modi said in Auckland.
Reflecting on the visit's significance,Modi noted,"This is a landmark in our relationship,one that revitalises our ties and reaffirms our commitment to friendship." He praised New Zealand's warmth and hospitality,saying it was deeply moving.
Modi and Luxon discussed shared democratic values and maritime cooperation in Indo-Pacific. Modi asserted,"Our firm belief in democratic values makes us natural partners. It is a match made for each other." He expressed confidence in their partnership's contribution to global peace.
During talks,Modi recalled Luxon's visit to India during Holi,which "added new colours" to their relationship. "Today,we are binding our relationship through a Strategic Partnership. This milestone will inspire us to push ahead with more vigor."
After the FTA signing in April 2026,Modi's visit aims to enhance trade and ties. The leaders previously met in New Delhi on March 17,2025,during Luxon's India visit.
Later,Modi will meet business and sports figures and address a gathering of the Indian diaspora,strengthening people-to-people ties. MEA said these interactions will solidify relations.
Modi's July 10,2026 arrival in Auckland featured a warm embrace from Luxon,showing their close diplomatic ties. visit,at Luxon's invitation,aims to open new areas of cooperation.
