This is Andhra Pradesh's first international airport since 2014,thanks to GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited (GVIAL). Built on over 2,200 acres, it cost more than ₹4,700 crore. 500 acres are set aside for future growth.

Commercial flights start August 17. Civilian flights at Visakhapatnam Airport will cease, as it's constrained by military use. current setup can't grow due to defense needs .

Bhogapuram,chosen strategically,serves Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram,and Srikakulam. It's close to National Highway 16,part of the Chennai-Kolkata corridor, ensuring smooth travel for passengers and cargo,boosting local industry.

The Ministry of Defence plans to expand INS Dega into a full-fledged naval base, further limiting civilian flights. It currently houses Dornier aircraft and Kamov Ka-28 helicopters.

GMR plans an aerotropolis around airport. Initial capacity: six million passengers yearly,with potential for 40 million . A 3,800-meter runway will handle large planes like Boeing 777 and Airbus A350. A parallel taxiway ensures smooth operations.

Features include a CAT I Instrument Landing System (ILS) and LED lighting, built to withstand cyclones up to 275 km/h. The airport's Airport Operations Control Centre (AOCC) uses AI for efficiency.

Beyond passengers,the airport will boost tourism, attract investments,and aid business growth. A cargo terminal with cold-chain facilities will enhance exports of seafood,pharmaceuticals, agricultural products,and goods.

It's been ten-year journey, starting with the N. Chandrababu Naidu government post-bifurcation. GMR got the project in 2019,agreement signed in 2020 under Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. The foundation stone was laid in 2023 .

Construction sped up between 2024 and 2026, finishing in time for the launch . airport's opening isn't just a new facility; it's vital infrastructure stride for Andhra Pradesh, boosting connectivity and economic prospects.
