Indian stock markets rebounded strongly on Monday. The Sensex and Nifty indices ended their four-day losing streak with a sharp recovery. The Sensex surged over 450 points, closing at 73,607, a substantial rise from its intraday low of 72,515. Meanwhile, the Nifty index climbed more than 150 points, finishing above 22,750 after dipping below 22,400 earlier in the day.
Kotak Mahindra Bank shares climbed by 4% following its second-quarter results. Other notable gainers were Adani Ports and Eternal, with their shares increasing nearly 3%. Companies such as Trent, Tata Steel, Asian Paints, IndiGo, ITC, Bajaj Finserv, and Reliance Industries also posted gains, with shares rising up to 2% each. But not all stocks followed suit. Bajaj Finance and HDFC Bank saw their shares decrease by almost 1%.
The market saw a broader recovery. The Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 indices both advanced over 1%, offering some relief after last Friday's downturn. Yet, caution prevailed. The India VIX, which tracks market volatility, climbed nearly 2% to 17.14, showing investor wariness.
Analysts are advising investors to remain cautious despite the day's positive trend. V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, highlighted ongoing challenges like high crude oil prices. These have cooled slightly to below $115 but remain high. He suggested that while current market levels might not be alarming, investors should seek value buys emerging from recent corrections. He noted that although the broader market remains overvalued, the downturn could offer opportunities in high-growth sectors.
Another analyst, Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments Limited, pointed out that the weakening AI trade has benefited India. He noted that capital outflows from Foreign Portfolio Investors have been more significant in South Korea and Taiwan than in India, aided by value buying and strength in sectors like metals, power, and healthcare. However, he warned that high energy costs and interest rates could moderate corporate growth in the coming quarters, despite early signs of earnings boosts in power generation, metals, and refining.
On the technical side, Anand James, Chief Market Strategist at Geojit Investments, expressed caution. He noted that Nifty's close below the 20-day moving average on Friday was disappointing. The increase in VIX suggests potential downside risks. However, he pointed out the long lower wick on Friday's chart, indicating recovery attempts. James advised that a move above 22,690 would confirm strength, while failing to maintain above 22,460 could signal a return to the downturn.
Despite Monday's gains, the market remains uneasy due to geopolitical uncertainties and upcoming policy decisions from major central banks, including the Federal Reserve, European Central Bank, and Bank of Japan. Investors are advised to stay selective, focusing on stocks with strong earnings visibility and valuation comfort as the environment continues to change.
