SpectraGaze raises ₹3.7 crore to advance optical imaging and infrared sensor technology in India

Key Takeaways

  • •SpectraGaze Systems secures ₹3.7 crore in seed funding for imaging sensors
  • •Aims to reduce India's reliance on imported detectors, boosting domestic tech
  • •Funds will expand engineering, enhance testing for space and defense sectors
  • •Partnerships with ISRO and others highlight private sector's role in space tech

Ahmedabad-based SpectraGaze Systems Private Limited has secured ₹3.7 crore in seed funding to advance its development of indigenous optical imaging sensors, infrared detectors, and electro-optical payloads. Announced on October 23, 2026, the funding round was led by Gujarat Venture Finance Limited (GVFL) with contributions from angel investors.

Founded in 2023 by former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) scientist Arup Banerjee, SpectraGaze aims to reduce India's reliance on imported detectors by developing advanced imaging technologies domestically. The company has already established partnerships with major Indian entities such as ISRO, the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), and Kaynes Technology India Limited.

The newly acquired funds will be directed towards accelerating product development, expanding the engineering team, and enhancing testing infrastructure. These efforts are intended to support the execution of existing customer programs and to strengthen the company’s position in India's burgeoning space and defense technology sectors.

Arup Banerjee, with 23 years of experience in space technology, founded SpectraGaze with the goal of creating advanced imaging sensors and electro-optical systems in India. These technologies are crucial for satellites, surveillance platforms, and scientific instruments, where the quality of detectors and optical components is paramount.

SpectraGaze initially focused on customer-funded programs to validate its technological capabilities and establish relationships with research institutions and industrial organizations. This approach laid the groundwork for its first external funding round, which aims to scale engineering activities and advance products for space and defense applications.

Funding to Enhance Engineering and Testing

The seed investment led by GVFL will support several key areas of SpectraGaze's technology development. A primary focus is the expansion of the engineering team to facilitate additional research, product development, and system integration activities. The funding will also bolster testing infrastructure, crucial for evaluating advanced imaging sensors for aerospace and defense applications.

Infrared detectors, for instance, require rigorous testing to assess sensitivity, noise characteristics, and response uniformity. Sensors intended for spacecraft must undergo environmental testing to ensure performance under conditions like vibration and temperature variations. Enhanced testing capabilities will allow SpectraGaze to refine system performance and prepare products for customer evaluation.

Additionally, the investment will aid in executing existing customer programs and expanding business development activities, thereby supporting both engineering capabilities and commercial participation in India's space and defense technology markets.

Infrared detectors are a significant focus for SpectraGaze. Unlike visible-light cameras, these systems detect radiation in infrared wavelengths, useful for thermal imaging, scientific observation, and military surveillance. Developing these advanced sensors requires expertise in detector technology, electronic design, optics, and signal processing.

India's ability to produce specialized infrared detectors is crucial, as these components are vital in imaging and surveillance systems. Indigenous development could strengthen domestic supply chains and offer more sourcing options for Indian system integrators. However, the funding announcement does not imply that all categories of advanced infrared detectors are in mass production in India.

One of SpectraGaze's notable achievements is delivering an infrared detector and test system to ISRO, demonstrating its role in India's national space research ecosystem. ISRO relies on advanced optical and electronic payloads for its satellites, which serve communication, navigation, and scientific research needs.

The delivery of the detector and test system highlights the contributions of private-sector enterprises to larger space programs. It also underscores the growing opportunities for Indian startups in supplying technologies to institutional and industrial customers.
