In Srikakulam, preparations are underway for 80th Independence Day celebrations at India’s first temple dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi. The Gandhi Mandiram-Freedom Fighters Smruthi Vanam,located in Shanti Nagar Colony,serves as a poignant reminder of sacrifices made during India’s freedom struggle.
Established on January 30, 2022,the site occupies 50 cents of land previously designated as an old park by the Municipal Corporation of Srikakulam. This initiative aims to rekindle the spirit of patriotism among younger generations who may be drifting away from historical narratives of freedom fighters and social reformers.
The temple is more than a mere memorial; it is a vibrant hub for celebrating patriotic values. Daily activities fill the air with the sounds of Vande Mataram, Jana Gana Mana,and Gandhi's bhajans,fostering a sense of national consciousness. Organizers emphasize that these programs are designed to instill an appreciation for the struggles and sacrifices that paved the way for India's independence.
Surangi Mohana Rao, chairman of the Mandir Committee,along with convener Jami Bhimashankar and coordinator M.V.S.S. Sastry,are spearheading the arrangements for the upcoming celebrations. Hundreds of students are expected to participate, engaging in activities that highlight the contributions of prominent leaders in India's history .
As visitors stroll through Smruthi Vanam,they encounter 65 painted busts of notable figures,including freedom fighters like Bhagat Singh and Subhas Chandra Bose, as well as social reformers such as Savitribai Phule and Jyotirao Phule. This collection serves not only as an educational rethe nation .
The temple's centerpiece is a towering 105-foot national flag, which stands proudly on a tall flagpole,symbolizing the unity and resilience of the Indian people. The Gandhi Mandiram is envisioned as a living tribute,where citizens from various walks of life can come together to honor the legacy of those who fought for India's freedom .
