Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar backs Ishan Kishan for India's 2027 ODI World Cup squad. Kishan dazzled with 125 runs off 79 balls, marking his second ODI century. Nearly four years since his first ODI double century. Strong comeback.
Kishan's form secures him a spot in upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan. A key player now, especially with Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant as competition. Gavaskar says Kishan's all-around skills make him invaluable. “I think he’s got his visa already. Somebody else has to really play out of their skin to keep Ishan Kishan out of the team.”
Gavaskar observed Kishan's batting improvement over past 18 months . Flaws that once held him back mostly gone. “He’s just a complete player now,” Gavaskar noted, praising Kishan's defense and aggressive shots. “Look at that shot Graham [Swann] was talking about, the lofted extra-cover drive. He’s got very good defence as well.”
Kishan's growth makes him hard to ignore. Gavaskar lauded his quick adaptation to bowlers, especially pulling short balls for sixes . “Earlier, you thought maybe around the off stump he was a little vulnerable . He didn’t quite have that lofted extra-cover drive. That’s what he’s got now,and it’s so hard to keep him quiet,” he said.
As India gears up for next World Cup cycle,Kishan's recent feats could shape the team's strategy. His T20 contributions add weight to his ODI case. With Gavaskar's endorsement,Kishan seems on track for 2027 World Cup squad. But who knows what twists lie ahead…
