A remarkable act of bravery by a teenage lifeguard has captured national attention, leading to an invitation to the White House. On Monday, 16-year-old Ryder Williams is scheduled to meet with President Donald Trump following his heroic rescue of a young boy from perilous waves at Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz.
The incident occurred on July 25, when Williams noticed a 10-year-old boy struggling in the ocean's tumultuous waters, which reached heights of approximately 10 feet. Without hesitation,he radioed for assistance and sprinted into surf. Williams managed to wrap his arms around child and dove beneath crashing waves, bringing him safely back to shore. A fellow lifeguard joined in to help once they reached the beach .
Video footage of the dramatic rescue quickly went viral, drawing widespread acclaim and even catching the attention of the president . In a social media post dated July 28, Trump expressed his admiration, stating, "We're going to bring this heroic young man,and his family, into the White House with, perhaps, the boy he saved, to give him a High Civilian Honor. Very brave,he deserves it!" This acknowledgment of Williams' courage has sparked excitement in the local community.
Williams, who is a rookie lifeguard, shared his thoughts on the rescue in a statement released through the California Department of Parks and Recreation. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to return the child to his family, emphasizing his love for his job. "This is my job and I love what I do. I'm thankful to my fellow lifeguards who perform rescues just like this every day," he said.
The young lifeguard's family has chosen not to pursue any fundraising efforts, such as a GoFundMe campaign, despite numerous requests. Instead, they have encouraged those wishing to support Williams to donate to the Santa Cruz County Parks Department's junior guard program, which he and his friends have participated in.
As Williams prepares for his visit to the White House, the community of Santa Cruz is rallying around him, celebrating not just the rescue but also the values of bravery and selflessness he has demonstrated. His actions serve as a reminder of the vital role lifeguards play in ensuring beach safety, especially during the summer months when families flock to the coast.
The meeting with Trump is set for Monday afternoon,as noted on the president's public schedule. Williams' story has resonated widely, inspiring many and highlighting the importance of quick thinking and courage in life-threatening situations.
