Thailand is positioning itself to become a significant player in the semiconductor industry with the launch of its Siam Silica framework. Announced on July 27 by Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI),this national roadmap aims to create a robust domestic ecosystem for semiconductor production and integrate Thailand into the broader supply chain within the ASEAN region.
At the unveiling,Minister Yodchanan Wongsawat emphasized urgency of semiconductor development, declaring it a "national priority." The framework outlines ambitious goals,including the establishment of eight integrated circuit design companies,a semiconductor fabrication plant,and two advanced semiconductor packaging facilities by 2030 . These initiatives are designed to bolster Thailand's technological capabilities and enhance its competitiveness .
However, analysts caution that Thailand faces significant challenges as it enters a field where its neighbors, particularly Malaysia and Singapore, have already made substantial advancements. Both countries have established themselves as leaders in semiconductor manufacturing, leaving Thailand with much ground to cover. The Siam Silica initiative will need to create a compelling value proposition to attract investment and talent.
The framework targets five key areas: photonics fabrication, advanced packaging, silicon design, quantum photonics,and power devices . These sectors are critical for development of next-generation technologies and will require a skilled workforce. To address this need, the MHESI announced the launch of a Higher Education Sandbox degree program aimed at fast-tracking deep-tech expertise in universities.
As part of this educational initiative,the STEMPlus platform will recruit a diverse pool of talent,including 152 lecturers and scientists, 950 researchers,553 highly skilled engineers, and 1,330 technicians. This comprehensive approach is intended to ensure that Thailand cultivates the necessary human resources to support its semiconductor ambitions.
While Siam Silica framework represents a strategic move for Thailand,the success of this initiative will depend on its ability to foster collaboration among educational institutions,industry players, and government entities. road ahead is challenging,but with a clear vision and commitment to development,Thailand aims to carve out a significant niche in the global semiconductor landscape.
