A tusker found dead in an open well in Thorapalli, near Gudalur, early Sunday, June 21, 2026. Incident happened on property of Mathai Ulak Kannan, who runs shelter for underprivileged next to his coffee plantation. Locals alerted Forest Department after spotting dead elephant.
Officials arrived, did a preliminary check. Elephant probably fell into well about 3 to 4 feet wide. “But we couldn't do postmortem on Sunday,” said an official. Postmortem planned for Monday morning to find cause of death. After that, department may consider action against Kannan for possible negligence.
Thorapalli is key corridor linking Gudalur to Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, crucial for elephant movement in Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Despite history of similar incidents killing elephants, tigers, leopards, conservationists argue open well rules are rarely enforced. Many elephant deaths here blamed on poorly planned human infrastructure.
“Strict action against landowners who leave wells open is necessary, but Forest Department should also check regularly to ensure wells are covered,” said a conservationist from The Nilgiris. Raises ongoing concerns about wildlife safety where human development meets natural habitats…
