Two people have lost their lives and hundreds have been forced to evacuate following the outbreak of twin wildfires on Greek island of Salamina,located near Athens . fires ignited almost simultaneously on Sunday afternoon,prompting large-scale emergency response from local authorities.
At approximately 14:40 local time, the first fire erupted near the island's southern coast,quickly spreading due to strong winds. A second blaze was reported just 20 minutes later in the eastern town of Selinia. The rapid escalation of both fires has raised concerns among officials, who are working diligently to prevent them from merging.
Approximately 200 firefighters are currently engaged in efforts to contain flames, which are fueled by the island's dry conditions and high wildfire risk. Fire official Vasilios Vathrakoyannis confirmed that the first fire broke out in a mixed residential and forested area in Peristeria. Tragically,firefighters discovered two bodies at the scene of this initial blaze.
As the situation unfolded,more than 500 residents and tourists were evacuated by sea, according to Greek media reports. The local government has mobilized five patrol boats and several private vessels to assist with the evacuation and firefighting efforts. Additionally, fleet of aircraft and 50 fire engines have been deployed to combat the flames .
Health Minister Adonis Georgiades reported that at least ten individuals suffered burns or displayed symptoms of smoke inhalation. Five of these victims were treated locally for their injuries. The Deputy Mayor of Salamina, Thodoris Zannis, indicated that firefighters are focused on preventing fires from spreading over a mountain,where they could potentially converge into a more significant threat.
The island, home to around 37,000 residents,many of whom are elderly, is facing dire situation as the fires rage on. The emergency response is being bolstered by water tankers and construction machinery to enhance firefighting capabilities.
This incident on Salamina is part of a broader pattern of wildfires affecting various regions in Europe. Firefighters in Belgium are currently battling a major wildfire in Hautes Fagnes, the country's largest nature reserve,which has been described as the most extensive in recent history. Meanwhile, Croatia has also experienced severe wildfires, resulting in at least one death and numerous injuries,with around 1,200 people evacuated from affected areas along the coastline.
