India's government just made bold move,green-lighting the Pradhan Mantri Surya Sarovar Yojana (PM-SSY) on July 31,2026 . With ₹5,070 crore on the table, focus is on floating solar power installations nationwide. Plan offers central financial assistance (CFA) — up to ₹1 crore per megawatt for projects on reservoirs and water bodies.
Target: 5,000 megawatts (MW) of floating solar by 2030-31. Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) will handle implementation. Right now,only about 0.7 GW floating solar capacity in India, though potential is 102 GW. Huge growth potential.
Projects under PM-SSY must include battery storage — two hours of energy,total 10,000 MWh for program. Helps states manage peak demand, cuts renewable energy curtailment during excess generation periods.
Look at Omkareshwar floating solar park on Narmada River in Madhya Pradesh. Largest in India at 278 MW,aims for 600 MW. No onsite battery storage yet,though that's key to new scheme.
Officials call PM-SSY financial support a “nudge” for industry, not permanent subsidy. Solar development usually in Rajasthan,Gujarat — vast land,high solar radiation . New plan wants geographic spread, especially in states with big water bodies,little land.
Land's headache for ground-mounted solar — needs three to four times more land per megawatt than panel area. India aims for 500 GW non-fossil fuel electricity by 2030. Solving land issues is critical .
National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) says Maharashtra,Madhya Pradesh,Karnataka,Odisha,Telangana have big floating solar potential. Floating systems use reservoirs,industrial ponds — no fight for farmland, less water evaporation . Cooler water boosts panel efficiency, cuts soiling losses .
Cabinet's approval of PM-SSY could boost domestic manufacturing of special components,create 16,000 to 17,000 jobs. But tech has its hurdles. Government estimates: floating solar costs ₹4.9 to ₹5.2 crore per MW,about 25% more than ground-mounted due to floating platforms, anchoring, mooring. Battery storage adds more cost.
Developers face engineering issues at floating solar sites — wear on structures,cable failures . Despite this,Centre believes benefits of diversified solar with storage outweigh higher costs.
