Key Takeaways

  • USS Lincoln faces mental health concerns amid prolonged deployment
  • Crew's well-being is prioritized but conditions are challenging
  • Thirteen senators demand answers about sailors' living conditions
  • USS George Washington is set to relieve the Lincoln soon

The USS Lincoln,a key asset in the U.S. Navy's operations, has become the focus of attention due to concerns over the mental health of its crew amid prolonged deployment. Adm. Brad Cooper, top U.S. military commander in the Middle East, emphasized the importance of mental well-being aboard the aircraft carrier during his visit on Saturday. He stated that mental health is a "priority" and noted that the Lincoln has reported one of the lowest rates of mental health issues among the eleven active U.S. aircraft carriers.

Despite this,Adm. Cooper acknowledged unique challenges faced by sailors on extended missions at sea. The USS Lincoln has been deployed since January, supporting U.S. military efforts against Iran, including a blockade of Iranian ports. This deployment has set a record, with the ship spending over 240 consecutive days at sea without a port call.

Concerns have been raised by family members of the crew, who fear that the mental health of their loved ones may be deteriorating under the difficult conditions reported aboard the ship . Some sailors have even attempted to jump overboard, highlighting the severity of the situation. Reports from Military Times and Stars & Stripes have detailed various issues, including poor sanitation, broken plumbing, and shortages of fresh food.

Adm. Cooper expressed his belief that mental health should be treated with the same urgency as physical and spiritual health . He praised leadership aboard the Lincoln for prioritizing crew resilience. "I've long believed that mental health is another aspect of individual health and requires our attention just like physical health and spiritual health," he stated.

In response to the growing concerns, thirteen Democrats from the Senate Armed Services Committee sent a letter to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Saturday. They criticized prolonged deployment, labeling it a "modern-day record" and demanded explanations regarding the conditions faced by the sailors. Hegseth, however, dismissed the reports of a mental health crisis aboard Lincoln, which has a crew of approximately 5,000.

President Donald Trump also weighed in on the situation, rejecting claims that the sailors had been at sea too long. He remarked, "Not nearly long enough," during a press briefing. The USS Lincoln's deployment, initially scheduled to conclude in May,has faced multiple extensions, leaving personnel at sea for over 200 days without a port call.

Maryland's Democratic Governor Wes Moore, a veteran of the U.S. Army, expressed his dismay over the reported conditions, calling them "heartbreaking" and urging the president to show more compassion towards the sailors. As the USS George Washington prepares to relieve the Lincoln, expected to arrive in the region within a week, the focus remains on well-being of the crew and the challenges they face during extended deployments.
