The United States has slapped new tariffs on imports from 60 trading partners. This follows end of a temporary global levy earlier this month. Tariffs, from 10% to 12.5%,target countries not doing enough about forced labor. Big players like UK,China,EU,Canada,Japan, and India are hit.
This escalation in trade tensions comes after Donald Trump returned to office last year. Jamieson Greer,U.S . Trade Representative, said the move aims to fix what he calls a human rights violation and trade distortion. He cited Section 301 of Trade Act of 1974,which lets U.S. tackle unfair trade practices.
These tariffs follow a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in February, saying many past tariffs were illegal. Biden administration then proposed new duties, citing lack of action on forced labor.
Greer stated,"Today's action will begin to correct what is both human rights abuse and distortive trade practice to improve the welfare of workers everywhere." New duties hit top 60 U.S. trading partners, covering 99.4% of American imports.
Countries enforcing bans on forced labor goods face a 10% tariff; others get 12.5%. So far,10 partners agreed to bans, others are responding to U.S. probes.
Trade experts say this continues Trump's aggressive tariff strategy. Deborah Elms from Hinrich Foundation noted many countries might struggle to show they're stopping forced labor imports. Tariffs likely to raise costs for businesses and consumers, though some exemptions may ease this.
Some trading partners worry. William Bain of British Chambers of Commerce said UK lost edge against EU,which has a better tariff structure . EU gets a 10% all-in tariff,UK faces extra duties on goods.
International reactions vary . Brazil called tariffs "unjustified" and "arbitrary," accusing U.S. of using workers' rights to push protectionism. Facing 12.5% tariff,Brazil plans to respond under reciprocity law and consider options with other partners.
Japan regrets new tariffs, claiming its trade aligns with international standards. Australia's Trade Minister Don Farrell called levies "completely unjustified" and promised to fight for their removal.
China opposed tariffs, denying forced labor allegations and accusing U.S. of political maneuvering. But human rights groups have documented forced labor in China, especially in Xinjiang.
Trump insists tariffs protect American workers and economy. In April 2025,he imposed tariffs up to 50% during "Liberation Day," claiming unfair treatment of U.S. After Supreme Court's ruling, administration sought new ways to impose duties, including recent 10% levy now replaced by new tariffs.
As tensions rise,U.S. is probing 16 countries for possible manufacturing excess, which could lead to more tariffs . Global trade landscape remains turbulent as nations deal with U.S. trade policies...
