United States mulling a 12.5% tariff on imports from India and other countries,analysts say,to strengthen its hand in ongoing trade talks . This potential tariff arises from a Section 301 probe into unfair trade practices,targeting goods from China,Japan,South Korea,Brazil,and Switzerland. At same time,goods from Canada,Mexico,the EU,UK,and Pakistan might see a lower 10% tariff.
U.S. Trade Representative officials,including chief negotiator Brendan Lynch,met Indian reps in New Delhi earlier this week. Atmosphere was cooperative. Indian government noted both sides committed to finalizing an agreement to boost trade. This follows interim framework set in February,meant to tackle trade issues.
U.S. had previously slashed tariffs on Indian imports from 50% down to 18% . Signaled intent to improve trade ties .
